Hello Cheverly! My name is Abel Olivo. My beautiful wife Aimee (you may have read her guest blog post last week) and I have lived in Cheverly for more than 10 years. Wow, when I read that, I can’t believe how time has flown by. In these last ten years, we have had two wonderful and amazing boys (most of the time), found a really great church in town at St. Ambrose, and have gotten really involved in the community. One of the groups that we have been active in is the Cheverly Babysitting Co-op.
The co-op, I’m told, was started over thirty years ago by a group of families looking for a little help with their children from time to time. The co-op is a smallish group of no more than 15 families that babysit for each other and earn points for each sit that they can then use for their own sit. It really is a great system. The maximum number of families is kept at 15 because one of the important things about the co-op is that we work to know all the families well enough to trust them with our kids. We see each other out and about in the community and have quarterly socials to bring the kids together and stay connected with everyone. We also invite prospective members to join us and get to know us. Usually perspective members come to several socials to get to know everyone and decide whether this is something that they would like to do.
When our first son was born, we were so excited to have the opportunity to raise him (and his younger brother down the line) in a metropolitan area that has so much to offer. Having both grown up in pretty homogenous small town communities, me in the Midwest and her in central Pennsylvania, our exposure to the “outside” world was pretty limited and we wanted something different for our children. We wanted them to see and experience a more diverse and enriched world and the DC metro area was and is perfect for that. The trade off, of course, is that we had to move away from our families, as I know many around here have too. Since moving to town and having a family, we eventually learned about the co-op which has been really great and has supplemented our support network. When not taking in all that this area has to offer, we have used the co-op for date nights, school pick-ups and drop-offs, doctor’s appointments, evening meetings, the list goes on and on.
It just so happens that I am the new leader of the co-op for the next couple of months. If you are interested in finding out more about the Cheverly Babysitting Co-op or would like to attend the next social, please leave a comment or contact me directly at firstname.lastname@example.org.
I hope you enjoyed finding out about one more of the great resources that Cheverly has to offer and one of the many reasons why We Choose Cheverly!
