Crime Stats, Public Safety Day, and Thank You Cheverly Police

Last night I spent some time reading the town newsletter. You know, the one that arrives in your mailbox every month? For the first 5 years of my time living in Cheverly, this newsletter went straight to the trash. I had no involvement in the community whatsoever. My life was so full that I didn’t give our community much thought. Things have turned around, thankfully and I wanted to give a couple items a shout out.

-Crime. It is always interesting to see the monthly crime report, but July’s crime report was particularly fascinating. Besides the normal crime that takes place on Landover Road, inside our little Cheverly bubble we only had 3 thefts from auto. Yes, 3 car thefts. A few days ago I drove to the Bed Bath and Beyond in Columbia Heights and felt like I was close to becoming a crime statistic myself. (no joke) It made me incredibly grateful for our town police who keep our neighborhood safe.

-Speaking of the Cheverly police, we have Public Safety Day coming up. It is definitely one of my favorite events in Cheverly. It seems like the entire neighborhood shows up for a free dinner and fun activities at the Town Park fields. Picture in your mind a huge family picnic with all different police vehicles, a helicopter and obstacle course. The obstacle course was a favorite of mine- see video of my son finishing it at the end. HA! I was cracking up. This year the obstacle course will be better than ever! According to the newsletter it will be “a bigger and more competitive obstacle course that will feature a large score board designed to publicize team names and scores. This course will feature team competitions designed to replace the tired softball games of Cheverly Day. Two-person teams will include male-male, female-female, and male female categories, with four different age groups: 10-16, 17-25, 25-50, and 50+ years of age. All winners will be published in the next Newsletter.” Published in the town newsletter? Now that changes the game. Who wants to race against me? See more info below:

The 9th Annual Cheverly Public Safety Day is scheduled for Thursday, September 15, 2016, from 5:30 to 8:00 PM at the Town Park located adjacent to Public Works. This year’s version promises to be the best so far, with plenty of demonstrations and vehicles, free food, and lively music. Prince George’s County’s “Air One” police helicopter will be on site, as well as police horses, K-9 dogs, motorcycles, and a wide assortment of police tactical vehicles. Dinner will be served between 5:30 and 6:30 PM. This year’s events also includes a “dunk tank,” a children’s coloring area, plenty of handouts, and all kinds of bake sale items. In addition, there will be a bigger and more competitive obstacle course that will feature a large score board designed to publicize team names and scores.
